Winter Olympics photographed from ISS

images capture Sochi from outter space

Hungarion version

ISS038-E-042992 (10 Feb. 2014) --- One of the Expedition 38 crew members aboard the International Space Station downlinked this vertical 600mm night view of Sochi, Russia, which clearly shows the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics while they are just a few days under way. Fisht Stadium where the Opening Ceremonies were held on Feb. 7 is easily recognizable as the bright circular structure. Sochi is a city in Krasnodar Krai, Russia, located on the Black Sea coast near the border between Georgia/Abkhazia and Russia. It has an area of 1,353 square miles or 3,505 square kilometers. Looking at galleries of the winter olympics one might think that sports photographers captured everything from all possible angle. And then NASA publishes this little surprise: you can’t call it to be one example of aerial photography, not even a satelite image, because it was taken from the International Space Station.

Shooting winter olympics is a tough job

I only follow the events of the winter olympics from home but I don’t envy those colleagues who work on site in Sochi. Well, of course I envy their photos, but the tiring hard work and lots of challenges they face there is something I’m not envy for. My blog surely would stop if I would be shooting there. It already happened some times when I had a more intense work at hand.
Thankfully this is not the case with Jeff Cable who keeps posting from Sochi letting a snaek peek behind the scenes with it.
